Resume Action Verbs: 120 That Beat "Responsible For"
"Responsible for" and "worked on" make hiring managers skim past your bullets. Here are 120 better verbs, grouped by the kind of impact they imply.
Every resume bullet starts with a verb. That verb does more work than you realize — it frames your contribution before the recruiter reads a single fact. "Managed the migration" and "Led the migration" and "Architected the migration" all describe the same job but imply three completely different levels of ownership.
The five verbs to stop using
- "Responsible for" — describes a job description, not a contribution
- "Worked on" — concedes low ownership
- "Helped with" — explicitly secondary
- "Assisted" — same problem as helped
- "Involved in" — the weakest of them all

How to pick the right verb
Ask what your level of ownership actually was. "Built" implies you made the decisions and wrote the code. "Shipped" adds that you got it across the finish line. "Led" implies other people were involved and you were the one steering. Don't inflate — a recruiter who hires you on inflated verbs is a recruiter who fires you in three months when the inflation is obvious.
