Resume Skills Section: What to Include and What to Cut

A 25-item bulleted skills list is a red flag. Good skills sections are short, grouped, honest, and tuned to the job. Here's how.

The skills section is low-stakes real estate that people use badly. The fix is structural, not literary — once you know the shape a strong skills section takes, writing one is ten minutes.

What belongs in a skills section

Concrete, verifiable skills that a hiring manager for this specific role would scan for. That's it. Three tests:

  • Could you demonstrate it in an interview? (If not — cut)
  • Would a keyword search in an ATS care? (If yes — keep)
  • Is it in the job description? (If yes — must appear)

What to cut

  • "Microsoft Word" — assumed of anyone. Same with Excel unless the role is analytical.
  • "Communication skills," "team player," "problem solver" — soft-skill claims prove nothing
  • Skills you used once, 8 years ago
  • Framework / language version numbers ("React 17") — just the name
  • Anything rated with bars, stars, or a 1-10 scale — looks amateurish and isn't verifiable

How to group them

Flat lists are noise. Grouped lists are readable. Three or four categories, each with 4-8 items, beats a 25-item dump every time.

Software engineer

Nurse

How to tune it to each job

Paste the job description into an ATS match tool. See which keywords you're missing. Add the ones you honestly have to the relevant group. If the JD says "Kubernetes" and you've used K8s, the word Kubernetes should appear.
